If we take the focus away from ‘product specifications’ or ‘how it’s supposed to work’ what more can be useful to know? Well, how it really works for your end-user. Quite simply, this is my Best Place to Work end-user story.
Soon I’ll have 1 year behind me at Ironstone. I’ve followed the development of the Best Place solution all the way from its implementation with the first customer through to the launch of the 2.0 version. Of course, we have rolled it out to our own organization and that makes me a Best Place to Work end-user. This is my story of what the experience has been like.
To begin with, what is Best Place to Work?
Best Place to Work is our cloud-based device management solution. It includes everything from how the devices are set up and work to what kind of experience and applications we as end-users have when using the devices. Let’s switch the focus back to my experience of moving to the solution 😊
My expectations of the solution
I remember going in to the office last summer and logging on to my new computer. In a few steps it was up and running. As it was my first job, I didn’t then understand that it was any different. But after listening to some of my friends also starting in new jobs, I understood pretty fast. I’m not just lucky getting this job. I’m lucky that the job has the technology to support me doing my work. This wasn’t mentioned in any of the job advertising I had seen. I know people who aren’t able to do their job, because the system is down, or the application is too slow. But let’s focus on the things that work; how was the experience after being enrolled into the solution?
How I summarize the experience:
- Easy, with always just one click or a few steps.
- Seamless feeling with one user and password.
- Secure, where needed an extra authenticator pops up and I just fill in the code from an app.
- Flexibility, I can work from anywhere from all my devices.
I had a struggle getting used to using OneDrive and Sharepoint the right way. I learned this the hard way, when running a demo of the new adoption tool for a smoother transition for the whole organization. We brought up the report showcasing a list of the people with the highest number of email attachments. I topped this list and was leading by some additional zero’s! It became something of an internal joke and a favorite to use for demo’s 😊
I would like to add to this, that it was last autumn and I’m no longer number 1 on this report. I didn’t really think about it before I saw my name at the top. Sharing the content from OneDrive instead of attaching it is much more convenient regarding the possibilities to edit and collaborate. I can forget about having several versions of a piece of content. It also means that I can get hold of my content not just from my work computer, but at home. So, as I said, I learned it the hard way, but it worked and benefited me in the long run.
The benefits for me as an end-user
Having a solution that works means that I can focus on my work, collaborate with my colleagues and get as much as possible out of my day. Because the solution is cloud-based I can work flexibly from all my devices and from where it suits me. I would say that Teams is one of my favorite collaboration tools. I use it to chat with the team, have meetings and to share updates and content internally. You can read more about this application and how I use Teams in my day-to-day work here. I don’t waste time on things like log in, accessing my applications or documents and security tools help protect my identity and information.
Have you experienced the frustration of applications loading slowly, having to restart or that they just not work the way intended? Don't let it become one of the stories where the systems create challenges for people to even be able to do their job. I can relate to the frustration with how I react to sites or network taking forever to load or just not working. The feeling that I just want to throw the device against the wall and do something else. So, with this in mind I can easily see the benefits from all the technology behind a modern workspace.
The future as a Best Place to Work company
Since becoming a user of the solution, I’ve got small updates and improvements along the way. I think this is how it’s going to be; regular, small updates and improvements will keep me on track and avoid going through any further installations or time consuming what nots.
Working in a company which is up to date with the tools and systems to support me as an end-user relieves me of the frustration from things not working. It also signals a company with a good digital culture. This is something that can be a great selling point for companies in the recruiting process. Why shouldn’t we have the same flexibility and up to date applications at work as we have at home? Let’s not forget that work is a place where we spend most of our week.
I find now that I take it for granted, that my workspace works and is always updated on all my devices. I can access the applications I need whenever I need to. I believe that companies are moving in the right direction to become more up to date and I hope many more soon are going to be in a place where they can say; technology is an integrated part of our business supporting me in my work.
